How does it feel when sleep just won’t come, no matter how many sheep you count? How do you feel the next morning? What about three days later when you’re trying to function dog tired? Our challenge was to find a d a way to express the experience or effects of chronic lack of sleep.

Light painting is a technique that uses a light source such as a flashlight to add light to a scene while taking a long exposure photograph. The light can be used to pick out and illuminate objects in the photo by shining the light on them or can even become part of the photo by becoming a source of light directly visible to the camera. This was our challenge for this competition remembering that to be “light painting you or a colleague must be adding light to the scene, not using light sources that already exist within the frame.

August 2025 Paul Robinson Trophy
Each year, Paul Robinson, the founder of Caulfied Photographic Society sets us an annual challenge. This year it was Pastoral landscapes similar to staffage landscapes, that depict idyllic countryside scenery, which may include people, cattle and flocks of sheep. Any people or animals were to be small to provide scale and interest to the vistas. These are landscapes in serene settings without the damaging effects of industrial progress.

This month really put our creative skills to the test as we created a book cover for our own bestseller. The book's cover is one of the most important elements to attract buyers, so we made sure it was eye-catching or storytelling. The subject and genre of was entirely up to the individual. I think you’ll agree that as well as creativity in the cover images, fictional author names added to the humour and creativity.

June 2025 Competition Winners
June saw us tackle multiple exposure, involving the overlaying of two or more different captures in one image. The images are typically less than full opacity, so that bits of all images can be seen and contribute to the overall effect, often producing an almost ghost-like image. This could be done in-camera or in post-processing. This technique quite distinct from a typical composite image where components from various images are seamlessly combined into one. The final effect sought after was one that clearly demonstrate that multiple images were part of the final result.

Selective colour was a technique used in our May competition to draw attention to a specific colour or object. This could have been as a result of any of the following techniques:
desaturating in post processing to leave only the desired object or colour
an image that consists overwhelmingly of shades of a single colour where no other colour contributed in any significant way
an mage overwhelmingly of a single colour, but had a significant element of a different colour or colours.

April 2025 Competition Winners
The challenge in April was to create an image that rocked! A rock or rocks needed to be a significant part of the image or picture story. They didn't have to dominate the image, but without them, the image would have been significantly diminished. Rocks could have been in their natural situation or an artificial environment, but they should not have been dressed into building material - that would have been stone after all. Participants could have taken a pictorial approach, or gone hard and technical.

Whether it was captured indoors or out, the subject and style were entirely up to the participants—so long as the images were created within the boundaries of their local postcode. February 2025 Competition Winners
Welcome to 2025. Our first competition for the year challenged us to raise perspective and create an image where the camera position was higher than elements of the scene being photographed. It didn't need to be an overhead shot, but it had to be clear that the image had been created from an elevated position. The degree of elevation wasn't crucial, but it had to be clearly evident. Aerial shots (drone or aircraft) were fine, but narrow fields of view where the camera was looking down on a small subject (macro, tabletop, etc.) were excluded.

December 2024 End of Year Competition
The End of Year competition for 2024 is a wrap. Club members showcased their best work, submitting up to two images per section. All entries (except for the Field Trip section) were submitted during the year in the monthly competitions. Field Trip entries were captured during the current syllabus period. This year, for the first time, participants had the option to fine-tune images entered earlier in the year, provided they stayed true to the original. This month we’re looking for images that show heat at work or the effects of heat, whether man made or natural. There can be a positive or negative message and the source of the heat does not necessarily need to be shown, but it must be clear that heart has had a part.

Our guest judge for October was Wolf Marx, a long time friend of CPS. The set subject was “Lets eat”, and the brief was:
Create an image that expresses the joy or the essence of food. This can be in the preparation and/or eating of food, by a single person or in a group, in a commercial environment or in the home. We’re not looking for styled food shots, still life or (especially) a snap of your breakfast.

August 2024 Paul Robinson Trophy
This year, Paul, the founder of the Caulfield Photographic Society challenged members to photograph Abstract Architecture. The winner is awarded a perpetual trophy. The images was to be derived from a human-made structure with an arrangement of colours, shapes, forms, light, texture and perspective that are not recognisable as the structure itself, although they may suggest the structure. This could be done with a glass, liquid, water droplets or some other surface such as a prism or lens ball. The subject had to be something physical and not edited in. Give in to the dark side and let dark tones dominate with just enough light to illuminate the subject. This is not an excuse to underexpose the subject as the lighting on the subject is to be correct. That is the challenge for the May competition - Low Key. December 2023 End of Year Competition
2023 was marked by a move to new clubrooms at the Caulfield RSL and more time in person than on zoom, particularly as the year progressed. The 2023 End of Year competition has now completed with a number of categories for digital and print - as usual the standard was high. Take a look for yourself.
